Watergate at 30
Just imagine an airplane crashing into the Pentagon every week for two years. You can then get an idea of what it was like here during Watergate. Nothing like it has ever hit this town before or since. Such a hurricane couldn't develop today, even if sex were involved, as Clinton showed. The networks wouldn't dare preempt "Friends" as they preempted "The Brady Bunch."
They're still speculating about who "Deep Throat" was. The father of a former friend of mine has been suspected for years. He was the fellow who urged Nixon to make his political comeback in the late '60s but left the Nixon White House two years before the break-in. In fact one night when the son poured out libations for us at their house, we went through all the White House papers Dad had left in the closet when he dumped the family. We found an "Enemies" list or something like that. Having been outside the administration by '72, it is unlikely that he could been Woodward's source. However, he was a good friend of Pat Buchanan who has lately been fingered as a Deep-Throat possibility. He could have been a go-between. But I don't think Pat is smart enough to be disloyal.

g acquaintance with Vice President Nixon in the 50s, my Dad admired him. Nixon was one of a few politicians he had any use for, the others being Harry Truman and Dan Flood. Dad even gave to Nixon's campaign and was offered a job by the Committee to Re-Elect The President (CREEP), but, of course he didn't take it.
