Here is a postmarked 1908 card showing the south portal of the W.B.&H. tunnel through Penobscot Mountain. This south portal faced Lake Blytheburn, Pine View. The north portal was in the mountain above Sugar Notch and near the old Lehigh Valley R.R. Sugar Notch-Fairview segment under which the tunnel passed. Today the north portal is buried under I-81. As far as I know this south portal may still exist. It should be blocked up for safety if it isn't. E.J. Quinby in his Carstens Publications book about the W.B.&H. writes of visiting this tunnel around 1970 when I-81 was being built. He reported an unstable ceiling and flooding from springs. You can see the spring-water flowing out in the old picture.
