Electricity came to the mines in the early 1900s. Here we have a mine motor pulling carts somewhere under Scranton about 1915. These machines could only pull horizontally. Carts being pulled up a grade (plane) had to be pulled by cable. The motor was fed by a trolley wire. You can see the pole extending up over the mineworker's head.
